Coming Up This Week….October 20-26

Sunday

It’s a “CRISP” start to our Sunday here in Michigan, 43 degrees at 8:30 a.m.  Luckily enough I’m in my nice warm house, my best friend Tina’s husband however is running today in the Detroit Marathon, stay warm Kenny and Good Luck!!!

My pick for the best foodie day this week is Thursday since its National Bologna Day.  Not because I’m a bologna fan but because my little Eric is.  Give my little guy a bologna burger (a slice of bologna on a hamburger bun) and he is one happy little guy.  He’ll be happy to know they made a holiday just for his favorite food!

Hands down the second best day of this week…Monday, National Pumpkin Cheese Cake Day.  Guess it’s no coincidence that it’s also Count Your Buttons Day.  After indulging in the best seasonal cheese cake I could see where it might be necessary to count your buttons!!

As always there are some tasty and fun days this week.  Pick a few, be creative and have a little fun with them.

Sunday

Good “SUNDAY” morning everyone!!  Hope your weekend has been a great one so far.

This week we have some fun and tasty days to celebrate.  Monday is National Dessert Day, what a fun day.  Celebrate by making a dessert to share with your family, buying one that you’ve been dying to try, take a trip to your local ice cream or sweet shop and indulge or an even better, eat dessert in place of a meal!!

Wednesday, October 16 is World Food Day.  It always amazes me that there are so many people in our country, especially children who go without food for days on end.  On this day do something to help put an end to hunger, donate non-perishable items to your local food pantry or kitchen.

And then there is Sweetest Day.  Sweetest Day is not celebrated everywhere, it’s a made up holiday who many feel for the sole purpose of making candy companies and florists a little extra cash.  I think a great way to spend this day would be to do something “sweet” for someone; visit the elderly, rake someone’s leaves, hold the door for someone, let someone go ahead of you in line.  It doesn’t have to be about candy or flowers, just something that leaves another person with the thought “Oh, how sweet of her/him.”

Also on Saturday is “Evaluate Your Life Day.”  Good day to reflect on how you think your life is going, where it’s going, the decisions you’ve made, the friends you’ve chosen, the path your on.  Is it, are they right for you?  What changes can you make on this day to make you a better person.

This a fun week filled with desserts, chocolate and pasta, good deeds and reflection.  Have fun with them, you never know who you might make smile this week.

Coming Up This Week…October 6 – 12

Sunday

It’s Sunday!!  A rainy Sunday here in Michigan and time to take a look to see what kind of whacky and yummy days we have this week.

This week we celebrate noodle day (today) and moldy cheese, hoagies, subs and grinders, I think all my grandbabies will agree the best foodie day this week is sausage pizza day although the only kind they all eat is sausage pizza!  Sausage/pepperoni…..we can make it work.

This week is also fire prevention week, with Fire Prevention Day celebrated on Wednesday.  Make sure you check the batteries in your smoke detectors and review your fire escape routes and meeting places with family members, especially if you have children.  It’s a great family project to work on together.

My personal favorite day this week will of course be “Take Your Teddy Bear To Work Day.”  Not that I will, my co-workers will think I’m crazy for sure but I am a bear collector, lots of Boyd’s bear figurines and teddy bears, so finding one to take with me would be pretty easy.

As always there’s are some unique and interesting days this week, pick a few and have a little fun with them.

Coming Up This Week…Sept. 29 – October 5

Sunday

I don’t know about anywhere else but yesterday was the perfect fall Saturday in Michigan.  The temperatures were mild, the sun was shining and the beautiful baby blue sky was an unblemished backdrop for fall’s burst of color.  Red, orange and yellow leaves still hanging on the trees created a perfect picture of fall in Michigan.

Our Sunday, however, is not so perfect…it’s cooler, overcast with a threat of rain.  But it is Sunday, rain or shine and time for our “Coming Up This Week…” post.  My favorites this week are “National Coffee Day,” “Homemade Cookie Day,” “National Taco Day,” “World Teacher Day,” and “Do Something Nice Day.”

I wish I could add vodka day in there somewhere but I can’t.  I’m a sweet wine, foo-foo umbrella drink kinda gal.  Give me a “Bellagio Funky Monkey” a frozen strawberry margarita, or a nice chocolate “Amaretto Freeze” and I’m a happy lady.

As always….pick a day or two this week and have a little fun.

Coming Up This Week…September 22 – 28

Sunday

If it’s Sunday it’s time for Coming Up This Week.  There are some fun and unusual days this week….

Today is not only the first day of fall, it’s also “National Ice Cream Cone Day” yummy, that one can be mine this week.  Our Joshua will love Thursday, it’s “Pancake Lovers Day,” Mio if you’re reading it’ll be chocolate pancakes for dinner at your house!!  For my two chocolate milk lovers Eric and Kaylee Friday is “National Chocolate Milk Day.”

The one that had me laughing the most was “Dog In Politics Day,”  Dogs in Politics Day is about dogs that were part of the presidential family. On this day in 1952 Richard Nixon gave a speech to assure the public that he had not received illegal campaign contributions for personal use. However one “gift” he received was a dog that his daughters named Checkers. He said they would be keeping the dog. The speech became known as the “Checkers speech.” *

So my family and friends, pick a day or two….be a little creative, have a little fun and have a great week!

Coming Up This Week….February 17 – 23, 2013

Funny Holidays

Happy Sunday everyone!!  Three envelope pot roast is in the slow cooker, we’re going to have a great Sunday here.

Not only is it amazing that this weekend got here in the blink of an eye, it’s even more amazing that half of the month is half over.  Counting those days down till spring….especially after yesterday, the Michigan State Police said that there were over 200 car accidents due to white out conditions that came and went Saturday afternoon.  A normal 40 minute ride for Walt from his dentist to home took almost 2 hours, every freeway he tried to get on was either closed due to multiple car pile ups OR there were bad accidents along the way that slowed things down.

But today is Sunday and it’s time for “Coming Up This Week…”   and today is Random Acts of Kindness Day.  It doesn’t have to be much, it doesn’t have to be about money, it can be as simple as holding the door for someone at the store, letting a car merge in front of you.  It can be as simple as a smile or a hello, because you never know, you may cross paths with someone who is having a bad day and your smile just might brighten their day just little or take their mind off their problems for a minute or two.  Today is also “Stuffed Cabbage Day” I guess I should have waited and made Walt stuffed cabbage today instead of last week.  Oh well he did enjoy them so it all works out.

This week we have “President’s Day,” and what I think might just be the weirdest day I’ve ever heard of, “Hoodie Hoo Day.”  Hoodie Hoo Day is supposedly a day when people go outside at noon, wave their hands and arms above their heads and chant “Hoodie Hoo” in an effort to drive winter out and welcome spring.  You know, I have to say I might just have to give this one a try.  I doubt that there is anyone who wants spring to arrive more than me, I’m all in for anything that might bring it home a little sooner.

We have “Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day,” “Love Your Pet Day” and “Walking The Dog Day” this week, I’ll have to make sure Joshua knows about those especially since he has two dogs and is now the proud owner of two hamsters (as grandma loving refers to as rodents).  They don’t have names yet, they are that new….oh I love that boy when it comes to animals he has a heart of gold.

My two food favorite days this week will be “Cherry Pie Day” and Banana Bread Day.  I already have recipes picked out to make in honor of those two days.  Of course “Drink Wine Day” will be celebrated here as well!

This is going to be a great week!  As always lots of fun and interesting days….use your imagination, be creative and have fun!

Coming Up This Week….February 10-16, 2013

Happy Sunday everyone!!  The one day of the week that has a dual role; even though the calendar shows Sunday as the first day of the week some people consider Sunday the beginning of the week while others consider Sunday the last day of the week because it’s the day before their work week starts.  We consider Sunday the first day of the week, a day we try to plan nothing and do nothing except relax and enjoy our time together.  So I ask you this…..Which day of the week is Sunday to you, the first day of the week or the last?

One thing we know for sure is that it is Sunday so that means it’s our ‘Coming Up This Week” post!  As always there are some funny and interesting days this week, especially today.  It is supposed to start raining here in Michigan later today making this a great day for “Umbrella Day.”  This past spring, for the first time ever I used an umbrella to shield myself from the sun while we were at Joshua’s football game, I was glad I had it.  Even though the umbrella was black and tended to draw the sun and heat it still kept me out of direct sunlight.  This spring my plan is purchase a light-colored umbrella for football season.

Today is also “National Cream Cheese Brownie Day.”  Who doesn’t like a good homemade brownie?  I already know that I will never get my little brood to eat cream cheese brownies so I think I’ll whip up a batch of good old double chocolate brownies for later today.

“Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day” is a day to be optimistic, think positive and look on the brighter side of things.  Since the first of the year I have been working very hard on doing just that.   No more looking back at the past, no more being dragged into other people s disputes even if they are family.  Life is way to short to spend it worrying about people or things that I cannot change.

Abraham Lincoln, born February 12, 1809, he shares his day with National Plum Pudding Day.  Hmmm, can’t say that I’ve ever seen plum pudding on the shelves in the grocery store.  Here’s a link to a recipe for “Grandma’s Plumb Pudding”  http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~mjw/recipes/dessert/grandmas-plum-pud.html.  We’ve never had it, it you try it let us know if you liked it.

Because we are good ole Polish Catholics, we can’t forget Paczki Day on Tuesday.  Paczki Day is always celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of lent making Tuesday the last day to consume goodies and sweets before fasting begins.   Paczki, wonderful little pastries  jelly filled, deep-fried pastries that everyone loves and eats whether they are catholic or not.  My favorite are the black raspberry ones, the traditional paczki before they started adding strawberry, apple and lemon filling to them.  Ahhh….the wonderful memories of childhood and Suchyta’s Bakery on the corner only 3 houses away from ours.  I loved my childhood, great memories.

Of course I have tortellini on the menu for Wednesday, which is “National Tortellini Day.”  It worked out that tortellini day fell on February 13 because that is also Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent) which is a meat free day for us as Catholics.  I have a new cheese tortellini recipe planned for our dinner Wednesday night which I’ll post about sometime next week.

We can’t forget Valentines day on the 14th which also just happens to be “Cream Filled Chocolates” Day.  I was a little surprised that February 14 wasn’t also some type of “National Rose Day” or at least some type of flower day.  Walt always opts for the roses, I love it.

As always lots of fun, silly, interesting and yummy days with this week.  Have fun with them and let us know what you did to celebrate!

Have  a great Sunday and a wonderful week everyone!!

Coming Up This Week…January 27 – February 2, 2013

Funny Holidays

It’s Sunday time for “Coming Up This Week…..”  Can you believe that this is the last Sunday of January?  Where do the days go??  The days, weeks months and years seem to fly by faster and faster each year which translated means that the older I get the faster time flies.  But Sunday has arrived yet again, quickly or not, ready or not it’s here and I already love everything about today because it is Chocolate Cake Day and chocolate cake is my favorite cake.  I haven’t made a chocolate cake or even purchased a chocolate cake in ages because for some reason my three little sweetie’s all love yellow and/or vanilla cake!!  Today homemade chocolate cake is on the dessert menu!!!

Today by far will be my favorite food day of the week because it is chocolate cake day however Saturday is National Crepe Day and I do love crepes, I just haven’t made any in a very, very long time.  When we were kids my mom used to make them on Sunday filled with fruit preserves and sprinkled with powdered sugar…..they were yummy!

There is also (or at least used to be) a little restaurant in Plymouth, MI called the Cozy Café.  Way, way back ….to the 80’s actually The Cozy café is where “girls day out” lunches used to take place.  We would shop all morning going into every little gift shop and boutique along the street then head over to The Cozy café for lunch, they had the best chicken crepes I’ve ever eaten anywhere.  Hmmm maybe before I go back to work and on a nice day I should take mom out for an afternoon and head to Plymouth.

One could only hope that they everyone loved their job well enough to consider it fun to go into work each day.  However for the 95% of people who don’t think going to work is fun they’ve made a day just for you, “Fun At Work Day.”  Think of some ways to have a little fun at work on Monday, nothing disruptive or mean-spirited, (that’s the HR Manager in me coming out) but something a little silly to make the day a little brighter.  Why not send someone a box filled with helium balloons, when they open the box the balloons all float out.  I have a ton of ideas, to bad I’m not working!!

“Inspire Your Heart With Art Day” has nothing to do with creating art and more to do with studying pieces of art to see what it says to you…..Boy was I way off.  I thought I would have to make some of those little cartoon characters that I learned to make last year at Joshua’s family art night.  I think this day should be spent as you perceive it; if you think it’s a day to create art, whether  that’s drawing, painting, taking photos or working on some other creation, than that’s what you should create, after all “art is in the eye of the beholder.”

Of course we can’t forget Groundhog Day we need to know how many more weeks of winter we’re all facing.  Perhaps this memorable hog watching day  is much more important to those of us in the midwest and northeast because we can’t get rid of winter fast enough.  Let’s face it, either way next week will still mark six weeks until the first day of spring but OK, I’ll play along.  If I had my way it would really only be six more weeks until summer!   As of today the first day of spring is about 7 weeks and 3 days OR 52 days OR 1,248 hours away!

Candlemas is the last holiday of the Christmas season. Candlemas is a Christian celebration, or festival, of the Feast of Purification of the Virgin Mary. It also celebrates the annual blessing of candles used by the church.

Wow, I got a little chatty for a Sunday….there are some fun, interesting and tasty days this week, as always be creative and have fun with them!

Coming Up This Week…January 20-26, 2013

Why does it seem that Monday to Wednesday goes by very slowly, Wednesday to Friday night takes forever yet Friday night to Sunday is passes like nothing more than a blink of an eye?  You would think that work days would fly since you have something to do, it doesn’t seem fair that lazy weekends come to an end way to quickly.

But it is Sunday and once again time for “Coming Up This Week….”  My niece Chantell will love that Today is Penguin Awareness Day, she loves everything penguins.  Take some time today to learn about penguins, perhaps a quick trip to the zoo would be in order to visit the penguin exhibit to say hello.  We have the grandparent/grandchildren annual pass so going to the zoo for a quick visit today would be easy except for the fact that it’s so windy here today we’d be blown over.

Everyone knows Martin Luther King Day is on Monday.  It’s a day to honor this American clergyman, activist, and prominent leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.   Dr. King is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience.

Yummy days this week are Blonde Brownie Day and Pie Day make something sweet to celebrate.  Not a huge fan of buttercrunch, although every now and then I like to pop one of those fun size Butterfinger’s, does that count?  I was surprised that buttercrunch wasn’t just a candy.  There is ice cream, shortbread, pie and salad…..who knew??  Certainly not me!

Days I think are kind of sweet and cute are National Hugging Day, make sure you hug someone and of course Spouse’s Day.   I just might have to make Walt something special next Saturday for Spouse’s Day.  There is also a Compliment Day, maybe this day would be the perfect opportunity to say something nice to someone, especially someone you might be at odds with, what a great way to break the ice.

Of course there are a few other silly days in the mix so as always be creative this week and have a little fun!!
